Commodore David Martin (later promoted to Rear Admiral) was the skipper of aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne on which I served. He too would pop up unexpectedly around the ship and talk face to face with the sailors.
He went on to become the Governor of NSW.
The really good commanders, (whether in the armed forces or in industry), are in touch with people at all levels of the organisations they run.
