"Is anyone demanding we clean out the backpackers' hostels of Bondi and Surry Hills?".
If the backpackers are from england, or western europe, they tend to go back, eventually, to their own country. These people simply cannot qualify for any government assistance, and the lure of the financial security, of their home country, will entice them to go back home.
On ABC tv (it could have been Q&A) the other day, it was mentioned that it is perfectly legal, for people to seek asylum, but without papers, they are simply illegal immigrants. People without papers, should be simply sent back - just wait till there is a batch of 200, charter a flight, and fly them to sri lanka (they will be happy to have them back), or to afghanistan. There would be no problems with landing rights, at Kabul international Airport. Just tell, them to get their papers in order, and try again. It is simply a matter of upholding the law.
