John, I think some good night time reading for you would be to read the Mr Market analogy coined by Ben Graham and popularised by W. Buffett.
Similarly, have a read of the Efficient Markets Hypothesis and I think half the questions you may ask could then be answered by yourself.
You also need to understand that age and investment horizon plays a rudimentary, yet significant, factor in individual stock positions with risk/reward weighed accordingly.
