SMB is the process through which the adsorption or ion exchange resins are filled and regenerated in cycle through switching valves, it is all those columns you see in the model photo. The media, feed and waste are dependent on the stage of the overall process and will vary as such.

It basically acts as a type of sieve and when it moves I assume that this causes boron and Magnesium to to move on the sieve not blocking it for the Lithium . Ultimately although it's a thorough process it's not perfect and "some" boron and magnesium gets through requiring further finite filtration.
