Investors do not supply a market with good and services, the customers who demand the good or service is why it is supplied. Likewise, shorters do not prevent a company from supplying a market with good or services. Capital markets are absolutely enormous, if a company needs money for a profitable endeavour it will get that money regardless of whether or not you decide to put your $5k into it.
I agree that it may FEEL wrong to short a company like MSB or to go long on a company that sells guns, but it really isn't making a difference. Investing in MSB will not save a kids life just like shorting a gun stock won't prevent the next massacre in the US. All we can do is take a position (long or short) and hope that all goes well with the company, we have no input though
