I agree with your view of macron. He seems to have ignored the fact that we live in a world where people have access to far more information and different views than ever before. That may support governments or not. It may highlight differences, disadvantage and social and economic distortions.
macron, in my view, has entirely missed the point and his reaction suggests someone from a comparatively privileged position who is out of touch with the lives of many he governs.
the refusal to collect racial or ethnic data may sound on the surface like a logical way to reinforce the idea that race has no place in a modern version of post revolution france - but it also means blindness on the extent to which race and ethnicity play a part in social and economic disadvantage
not knowing or misjudging the reasons for rioting sounds distinctly like the ingredients that fed the French Revolution.
liberte. Egalite. Fraternite are fine ideals but they need much more work than continual restatement. Belief can easily become self deception
