Minemakers, which is planning to set up the phosphate mine at Tennant Creek, says an exemption from the new tax will allow it to reinvest in the project and assist in getting overseas investment.

"Not having that super tax meant we'd have something like an extra $193 million left in the project," its manager, Andrew Drummond, said.

"That money would then go to get a rail link ... to expand into phosphate fertiliser production and to make it a long-life mine after the very high-grade initial material is worked out in the first decade or so."
