From what I have read, there are 17 elements described as rare earths (easily googled and listed in various posts here). They are not considered to be particularly rare in occurrence in the earth's crust, but are not evenly spread. They're described as being about as common as copper.
Scandium and Yttrium are often listed with them as they possess similar properties, and from what I have read, gallium and germanium may as well be listed in the Garden World catalogue alongside gardenias, gazanias and gerberas.
