On a roll: Shell makes fourth oil find offshore Namibia

Supermajor makes fourth successive discovery in prolific Orange basin.

"Shell has racked up a fourth successive discovery offshore Namibia after hitting pay dirt with a just-completed exploration probe in the Orange basin. Fresh from this latest success, the supermajor has now started drilling a fifth exploration probe, targeting a major prospect some distance north of its quartet of discoveries in Block 2913A.

Last year, Shell opened up what is now one of the world's most exciting hydrocarbon plays with its Graaf-1X oil discovery, before quickly drilling a successful follow-up probe called La Rona-1X. Returning to the Namibian exploration fray this year, it recently completed what Upstream understands was a very promising well test on Graff-1X, after which the semi-submersible rig Deepsea Bollsta spudded the Lesedi-1X probe.

A Shell spokesperson told Upstream: “As part of our multi-well campaign in Namibia, we’ve safely and successfully concluded drilling our fourth exploration well Lesedi-1X. “The data we’ve gathered so far confirms the presence of hydrocarbons and further evaluation is required to determine development potential.” The probe spudded in late May and completed recently.

Little is known about the Lesedi structure's geology, but given Shell's previous discoveries were either Upper or Lower Cretaceous, it would be safe to assume the latest probe was targeting a similar-age prospect. The Deepsea Bollsta has now begin drilling the Cullinan-1X probe, some 60 kilometres north of Lesedi, close to the border with Galp-operated block.
