You made reference to "the CNOOC rumour taking over shells share at around $24 bucks a share." I thought that the $24 figure in that rumour was the price CNOOC might have to pay if it launched a FULL takeover bid for WPL ... and that would only be after it acquired Shell's stake for a yet undisclosed amount.
The rumour mill may well help buoy WPL's s/p short term but there are a lot of 'ifs' and 'maybes' in the equation - hardly a platform for sustaining WPL's s/p with the price of oil in retreat.
If CNOOC were to launch a full bid for WPL (and there are all kinds of hurdles to overcome here) surely it would make sense for CNOOC to wait and let falling oil prices 'cheapen' their bid price.
Short term, I think WPL will be under pressure but it's a great stock and one that I miss in my portfolio ... and one that I intend to have again, albeit at the 'right' price.
