Nearly two-thirds of readers surveyed want Australia to consider small modular nuclear reactors as part of the solution for abandoning fossil fuels, according to a snap poll taken last week.

The poll of 421 readers of The Australian Financial Review found that 58 per cent favour further work on studying the use of the small modular reactors (SMRs).

The reactors are being researched in several countries to replace ageing first-generation nuclear plants and as coal-fired generators are closed. The first is expected to come on line later this decade in the US.

“Nuclear energy makes sense and should be considered as part of the energy mix,” said one reader. “Solar and wind lack the energy density to provide a long-term solution and cover far too much land area.”

Slightly less than a third of readers did not want the small nuclear plant option considered, affirming the historic reluctance Australians traditionally have exhibited towards nuclear energy.
