My gut feeling from what has been discussed by VUL in their webinars and video interviews is a definite no. I am a holder of VUL as well and from these videos I have learnt extracting lithium from deep sedimentary basin brines is analogous to onshore oil/gas drilling and production. You use the same drilling rigs, employ the same geotechnical, engineering and operations personnel and employ the same geophysical, geological, reservoir engineering, production and drilling techniques. These basin wide resources are potentially huge with multi decade production profiles. This is ExxonMobil's area of expertise.
My feeling is lithium extraction from deep sedimentary basin / geothermal brines will accelerate in the future, based on what I see is happening with VUL and the Salton sea operators.
I think it is far more likely for ExxonMobil to take up an equity position or perhaps even provide a takeover offer for VUL for reasons mentioned above. Just my 2cents worth. Please don’t attack me for pouring cold water on speculative flames. Just trying to provide some fact based reasoning.
