Sundance receives good news on Mbalam
The West Australian July 16, 2010, 12:56 pm

West Africa-focused iron ore explorer Sundance Resources has received some positive news following weeks of grief after its entire board was lost in a plane crash in the Congo last month.

The company announced today it had received environmental approval from the Cameroon government for its Mbalam project in the West African nation.

Cameroon's Ministry of Environment and Natural Protection has issued an environmental compliance certificate for the project, which is required before Sundance can receive a mining permit.

Sundance said the ministry had asked for several additional studies to be completed to update the company's environmental and social assessment, which was submitted in March.

The company said the additional studies were "readily achievable".

"The green light from the environmental regulator is a key milestone for the Mbalam project as Sundance seeks to position itself as the leading developer of a global-scale regional iron ore province," acting chief executive Peter Canterbury said in a statement.

Mr Canterbury, Sundance's chief financial officer, took on the acting chief executive role last month when the company's entire board was killed in a plane crash en route to the Mbalam project.

The company's shares have been suspended since June 21.
A funeral service for former Sundance managing director Don Lewis will be held at Hale School this afternoon.
