    New Technologies and Artificial Intelligence for Highway Bridge Monitoring: A Panel Discussion

    Abstract: Structural monitoring is becoming popular among bridge owners due to the value it offers for asset management of bridge infrastructure. Recent advances in sensor technologies and artificial intelligence are helping to better understand and utilize the data from monitoring. Panel will discuss: (a) emerging technologies and AI tools for monitoring and augmenting bridge inspection inspections, (b) how to effectively use data to explain and predict system performance to provide support design, operations, and management of highway systems. And (c) limitations, ongoing research, and research directions in this field.

    Panelist Biography

    Dr. Sreenivas Alampalli is a Senior Principal in the Transportation Practice at Stantec, focusing on asset management in the Bridge Sector, including structural health monitoring (SHM) and nondestructive evaluation services. Prior to that Sreenivas worked at NYSDOT for more than 30 years in the areas of inspection, evaluation, and research of bridges and other structures. He has successfully managed more than 100 research projects and authored more than 250 technical publications, including six books related to civil infrastructure monitoring, risk management, and suspension bridge inspection and maintenance. . He is a distinguished member of ASCE, and Fellow of SEI, ASNT, and ISHMII. He is also a member of the TRB Standing Committees on Bridge and Structures Management, Bridge Preservation, and International Coordinating Council; and Founding President of IABMAS-USA National Group. He is a recipient of several awards including Bridge NDT Lifetime Service Award from ASNT, OPAL Award for Lifetime Achievement in the government sector from ASCE, and Henry L. Michel Award for Industry Advancement of Research from ASCE.

    Dr. Hoda Azari is the FHWA’s Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Research Program Manager. She is a structural engineer by education and her expertise is in NDE and structural health monitoring (SHM) of transportation infrastructure. Dr. Azari has over 10 years of experience in NDE and SHM of highway infrastructure. She has done extensive research studies for condition assessment and damage detection of transportation infrastructure and performed forensic investigation services to State DOTs. Dr. Azari is the lead for the SHRP2 bridge and tunnel projects. She is also the FHWA’s technical point of contact for application of Unmanned Arial System (UAS), Augmented Reality (AR), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in highway infrastructure.

    Dr. Fernando Moreu is an Assiciate Professor at the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) at UNM. He holds courtesy appointments in the Departments of ECE, Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Science. He is the founder and director of the Smart Management of Infrastructure Laboratory (SMILab). SMILab’s research interests include structural dynamics and control, structural health monitoring, wireless smart sensor networks, cyber-physical systems, computer vision, earthquake engineering, augmented reality, unmanned aerial systems, bridge engineering, and aerospace structures monitoring and reusability. He has published 73 journal papers and conference proceedings. Prof. Moreu received his MS and PhD degrees in structural engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2005 and 2015, respectively). In 2019, Prof. Moreu received the CCEE Stamm Teacher of the Year award. Prof. Moreu’s projects are funded by NSF, DOE, DOD, FRA, NAS, USDOT, NASA, TRB, NMC, and the commercial sector. He is a Member of ASCE, ASME, SPIE, and AREMA. Prof. Moreu is a registered Professional Engineer.

    Dr. Hae Young Noh is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University. Her research focuses on indirect sensing and physics-guided data analytics to enable low-cost non-intrusive monitoring of cyber-physical-human systems. She is particularly interested in developing structures to be self-, user-, and surrounding-aware to improve users’ quality of life and provide safe and sustainable built environments. The results of her work have been deployed in a number of real-world applications from trains to the Amish community, to eldercare centers, to pig farms. Before joining Stanford, she was a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University. She received her Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Civil and Environmental Engineering and the second M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. She earned her B.S. degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University. She received several awards, including the Google Faculty Research Awards (2013, 2016), the Dean’s Early Career Fellowship (2018), the NSF CAREER Award (2017), and various Best Paper Awards from ASCE, ASME, ACM, IEEE, and SEM conferences.

    Dr. Douglas J. Thomson received his PhD from Stanford University and is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Manitoba, Canada. Dr. Thomson has extensive experience with instrumentation systems, including a record setting capacitance sensor and sensor/instrumentation systems used in monitoring civil structures. He has been involved in developing and deploying system for the real-time monitoring of over 25 bridges. He has published over 130 journal papers, is co-inventor on 7 patents. He has also held positions as Chief Technology officer Intelligent Structures (2015- ), Assoc. Dean Research (99-2004, 2011-17), Professor and Associate Director of SIMTReC Canada. He is also on the ISHMII council. ISHMII is an international society devoted to structural health monitoring of civil infrastructure. He is also a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.

    Dr. Helmut Wenzel has been involved in bridge engineering construction and health monitoring since the beginning of his career. Major bridge projects required the development of extraordinary skills in design, construction technologies as well as construction and asset management for successful completion. In this capacity Dr. Wenzel serves as technical advisor to many owners or operators of large infrastructure projects.

    Abstract: Requests for SHM usage on commercial aircraft are expanding and now moving through the regulatory agencies. Approval for such SHM applications requires specific proof of performance, and the definition of the validation steps has evolved significantly in recent years. Join commercial aviation regulators and industry representatives from around the world as they share their perspectives, vision, and thoughts for the future of SHM. Today, formal approval of individual SHM applications requires satisfying an existing set of regulations, many of them mirroring requirements for approving nondestructive inspection methods. These considerations will be highlighted in discussions on several examples of specific aircraft applications that have proceeded through the approval process. Currently, each SHM application must fit into the current regulatory set-up of scheduled maintenance. In addition to SHM, civil aviation industry is actively pursuing a broader suite of technologies such as IVHM, CBM, PHM etc., and new regulatory guidance may be needed to support their effective and safe implementation. Individual presentations will be followed by an open Q&A session.

    Panelist Biographies:

    David Piotrowski currently works as a Senior Principal Engineer in Delta Technical Operations’ Technology Development group. His responsibilities include innovation of inspection technologies, oversight of Delta’s internal NDT materials and processes, developing and implementing novel inspections to solve in-service problems, and assisting in Damage Tolerance Analyses and Failure Investigations. He is currently Chairman of SAE’s Aerospace Industry Steering Committee on Structural Health Monitoring (AISC-SHM) and Vice-Chair of SAE’s Steering Group of Integrated Vehicular Health Monitoring (IVHM-SG).

    Dr. Michael Gorelik is the Chief Scientist for Fatigue and Damage Tolerance at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He has over 25 years of experience in the areas of fracture mechanics, fatigue, damage tolerance, characterization and modeling of material behavior, probabilistic methods, prognostics and health management. He successfully applied this expertise to design and certification of aerospace products, fleet management and risk assessment, root cause analysis, definition of manufacturing process controls, and coordination of R&D programs and consortia. At the FAA, Dr. Gorelik supports various certification programs, development of advisory materials and rule making activities across the Agency, training of FAA personnel, research and evaluation of new technologies, and engagement with industry working groups and standards organizations (SDOs).

    Ivan Li is an Aerospace Engineer with the Technical Policy Branch (Airframe Section) of Policy & Standards (P&S) Division at the Federal Aviation Administration. His expertise includes certification of airplane structures and policy development necessary to support certifications and approvals of Structural Health Monitoring applications. He is currently the SHM focal of P&S. He has been with the FAA for 21 years. Prior to his FAA career, he worked over 12 years in the aviation industry at Boeing Commercial Airplanes and Goodrich Aerostructures specialized in structural repairs, continued operational safety, and MRB activities.

    Dr. Simon Waite is a Structures Expert for the Certification Directorate at the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. Prior to his EASA career, he worked over 25 years at British Aerospace, British Airways, and UK – CAA. Specializing in Composites, Dr. Waite also is a member of the Aerospace Industry Steering Committee for Structural Health (AISC-SHM).

    M.Sc. Rafael Foltran is a Regulatory Specialist in Civil Aviation at ANAC, the National Civil Aviation Agency of Brazil. He has over 13 years-experience at ANAC overseeing the certification and validation of airplane structures, is in charge of SHM certification at ANAC and is a contributor to the Aerospace Industry Steering Committee for Structural Health (AISC-SHM).

    Dr. JB Ihn is a Technical Fellow in Research & Technology at Boeing Company in Seattle, WA. He has over 25 years of experience in smart structures and active sensing materials, Structural Health Management (SHM), in-situ nondestructive evaluation, fatigue/composite damage characterization, system durability/reliability quantification/simulation, digital twin and energy harvesting. He is in charge of Boeing SHM R&D roadmap, technology development and transition into all Boeing products. Along with his 18 years at Boeing, he holds Affiliate Assistant Professor at the University of Washington, Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He is currently Vice-Chair of SAE’s Aerospace Industry Steering Committee on Structural Health Monitoring (AISC-SHM).

    Dr. Nicolas Dominguez is the Head of Inspection and Sensing Methods at Airbus, in the Airframe Engineering department, Toulouse, France. He leads a team of experts and specialists in inspection methods for aircraft structures. Nicolas is also in charge of the R&T roadmap for topics related to inspection of structures, for all divisions of Airbus. His work in NDT and Structural Health Monitoring has included composites, advanced ultrasonic phased array techniques, Probability of Detection, modeling & simulation during his 20 years of experience at Airbus. Dr. Dominguez is a member of the Aerospace Industry Steering Committee for Structural Health (AISC-SHM).

    Dr. Fernando Dotta is a R&D Project Manager and Technical Fellow at Embraer. He leads the R&D development for the Structural Health Monitoring Team. During his 17 years at Embraer, he specializes in structures stress analysis (linear and non-linear), computational fracture mechanics and structural health monitoring. Fernando is also a member of AISC-SHM.
