From 1880 to 1933, they were known as the South Melbourne Bloods. The nickname that stuck came from the similar guernsey they use now in 1878. From 1933 to 1982, with a lot of Western Australian players listed due to lack of South Melbourne local footy strength, they shifted the name to the Swams but South Melbourne diehards still called them the Bloods.
A basic google search would have picked that up.
Or review of Club history, even recent history with Buddy Franklin.
If New to football, a little history might be a good thing to learn although the current VFL have little concern for history IMHO and a more swayed by the diminishing dollars.
Better umpiring might help matters especially if they want to take the game beyond the Melbpurne ring roads.
