European gas prices spiked 40 per cent on Wednesday night over fears workers at Chevron and Woodside LNG plants in Western Australia would start industrial action, crimping already tight international gas supplies.

The Offshore Alliance – made up of the Australian Workers Union and Maritime Union of Australia – on Tuesday filed for protected industrial action on the giant Gorgon and Wheatstone LNG projects in WA, setting the scene for a drawn-out standoff over pay and conditions.
