There's a long history of US meddling in Ukrainian internal affairs via various NGO's.
After Yanukovich changed his mind on the EU-Ukraine association agreement, NED (National Endowment of Democracy) boosted it's funding to the New Citizens group in Ukraine. A group which according to Financial Times played a big role in actually getting the protests up and running. This organisation received hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of dollars from US democracy-promoting initiatives.
US involvement in Ukrainian internal affairs goes back decades. Orange revolution? Officially US spent about 14 million USD to get rid of Kuchma.
