No one is saying match the 400k USD salaries. Rex has never relied on expats to flow home. The pilot make up has never had a great percentage of them. They did however abuse the 457 visas when there was a great supply of local pilots (albeit without type ratings) and I don't think they'd be a single one of them left. The huge problem rex has is that they rely on cadet pilots and apprentice engineers to flow up through the ranks. The new cadetship is now 9 years and 200k out of pocket for the cadet which is a huge turnoff for new starts. Just to spend the first few years making less than 60k minus your loan repayments for the training. In terms of engineering, they tend to refuse promotions to a licensed AME to save on wages but it ends up with a larger turnover. From all reports the management culture drives the huge turnover of staff. Couple that with below market salaries it's a great combo in the current environment. I have also heard from friends of friends of pilots quitting with no jobs to go to. Qantas is it's own beast with it's own issues. No need to compare them.

The chickens have come home to roost. Sign on bonuses for Perth, Townsville and Cairns bases. I'm not sure where they'll find them when the salary is still so low. This is an airline being destroyed by it's own doing.
