Kingpin, pretty sure I saw something that stated in real terms it took melbourne 8 years, till 1998 to get back. A time frame like this enough to be considered long-term especially when many have significant outgoings.
Not the 'long-term' (lifetime) as in your example, but for an investment horizon it's certainly far from short term!
