The process of recall changes memory at a physiological level. Known as 'memory reconsolidation'. Recall opens synapses involved in the memory. They stay open for a period of hours, then when they close again, the memory is slightly altered. A lot depends on whether storage is in working memory or long term memory.

Memories are poor indicators of what actually happened, even when large groups of witnesses are involved. Several reasons for this:

    - Most people are not at all observant. The Ariel School UFO case proves this. Every kid said and drew something different.
    - An extremely high percentage of people badly want to fit in with the crowd. If the crowd says X, I better say that too. Next thing I belive X.
    - Memory reconsolidation (it happens whether we want it to or not).
    - Some people make stuff up for various reasons.

Despite all this, NDEs should still be given credence for their impact factor. People who have them are massively changed as a result.
