HGST agreements I recall were around them getting first dibs on purchase &/or use of the tech for a period. That's documented on here, way back somewhere.
Organic memory is too slow, I'll tag it if I find it before others respond.
Oh, and then there was in-depth technical content access, which could give them a market head start, and perhaps a purchase price advantage if others were put off by this.
