In response to a few posts regarding downstream potential, I have to imagine that between the POSCO JV (which is a real production facility) and the Calix JV, which is more of a test facility, we are gaining the IP to be able to build our own plants at or near Pilbara.
Beyond the obvious benefit, higher margins and vertical integration, there’s also a significant cost saving associated with transportation (the waste stays at the mine) and the ESG benefits associated with the massive reduction in transportation.
Li3PO4 is a particularly interesting product because a significant fraction of Chinese battery production utilizes Lithium Ferrophosphate technology, it’s a far less complicated and expensive process than going to LiOH or Li2CO4, and the plant can be completed relatively quickly.
I suspect that the next big CAPEX item, after P1000, is going to be a refinery in Pilbara.
