Theory: EnBW is mostly interested (and competent) in green, cheap and reliable energy, therefore they are a competitor in the geothermal game. In the chemistry/lithium game they just want to not miss out, and the are highly connected, so why not just grab all available public science money of the University buddies and all the nice enthusiastic news coverage, because there is nothing to loose, but a fortune to win.
They are Best in energy and local permitting, Vulcan is Best in chemistry-it's a Match (after the free science money runs dry)
Maybe they order a batch of Vulsorb once it is a proven technique and process the stuff in Vulcans Hydrolyseur in Hoechst. To my knowledge they Do not have any downstream Plans.

Antitheory: BASF next door is a chemistry behemoth, and like EnBW very well connected. That may be the preferred partner.
    Thanks for your links!
