The 2019 results did not show that the treatment helped reduce the symptoms of the common cold. It was only on subset analysis that an effect was found (treatment within the first 24 hours, viral lab positivity, and one other I can not remember off the top of my head). The evidence was not enough to continue registration, hence the new trial.
Who knows what happened in this trial but I have some difficulty in believing they could have swapped bottles. Even if that did happen it points to appalling governance.
Similarly, clearing of nasal shedding (recent phase 2 results) may be very interesting in making the case for infectivity (ie very helpful in a pandemic situation), but not at all useful with non-nasal symptoms of a cold (or Covid). Not so sure about nasal symptoms from the virus either, but perhaps there may be something to be shown based on reducing secondary bacterial overgrowth.
Hope they can resurrect their program somehow. Some seriously capable people involved with the company who must be gob-smacked at the moment
