Russian troops, both those already stationed in Crimea and those Putin sent there in 2014 took over Crimea and then magically there was a "referendum" that just happened to go Putin's way. What a miraculous unexplaineable coincidence!
Clearly Ukraine being neutral then was a huge advantage to prevent violation of their territorial integrity.
