So obviously this isn't financial advice, but for shares held in the name of your SMSF - if they are held for more than 12 months, then you pay 10% tax on all of the gain. If held for less than 12 months, you pay 15% on all of the gain. I think if you go into 'retirement mode' and are no longer contributing to your super, you possibly don't pay tax on earnings (I'm not sure). The $3m bit though, I thought, was an EXTRA 15% tax on any super earnings above that cap. So duration held is one thing, your age is another (affects eligibility to access), actual status of you and your fund is another, and the $3m cap is another thing altogether. Fun eh!
