Before the change in leadership, the company published the results of its May 2022 online/Kobe auction. Sales were classified as either auction or pre-auction, the latter presumably to private buyers. 22,450 pearls were sold in the auction at an average price of US$16.3 per pearl. 16,355 pearls were sold pre-auction at an average price of US$62.6, nearly 300% higher. Total proceeds were US$1.39mn at an average price of US$36. That demonstrates my point about auctions not being entirely representative of the whole market. And it shows the extent of price inflation within just 16 months!
