So, is today’s surge in the share price a sign of confidence (or inside knowledge) that WHC will secure the BMA assets, or a relief rally because WHC has failed in (or withdrawn) its bid? My money is on the former; if that’s right, WHC will draw substantial long-term benefit from these acquisitions — even if returns to shareholders are lowered somewhat for a year or two.
Now to press the case for reform of the obscenely high coal royalty regime in Queensland! Two key things are needed: (1) place strong pressure on the QLD opposition to commit to reform if/when it gains government; and (2) kick out the Chook and her mob in October next year.
