This latest decision of the FIRB to defer its findings has a distinct political stench about it. Having previously extended its review period by 90 days, the board has had plenty of time to review the Wilmar proposal. This body has advisory functions and is supposed to make recommendations to the federal government compatible with government policy. But it is still the government which makes the final decision.
Given the looming national election, one wonders what extent (if any) of political pressure was applied in this latest FIRB delay.
