"They" are not just customers. It could be a government controlling your spending and only allowing transactions that "they' approve. The Canadian experience proved that this is a real threat.
"We want to stop having to waste time at ATMs, banks etc." You can do that now. It can be your choice. You also need the choice to use cash if you wish to do so.
