I read some where the other day that the costs of rolling out the infamous NBN was based on rate $1 per km. How they get to that sort of figure beats me.
The real fact is there has been no real cost / benefit analysis ever done. It is a hastily rehashed idea from the $4.7 billion dollar idea thrust forward by Labor in 2007.
I would like to see where they think this thing will benefit.
How many younger people today actually hook up the landline telephone when they move into a new house / unit these days? Not many, they live on a mobile then hang out at Maccas to use the free WiFi to do their emails. They usually have a wireless card stuck into the side of their laptop for daily use. The games the kids play on their computer comes on a DVD or CD.

Plenty of the techno talk is just that, and pipe dreams. Does the Labor Party really think the whole population is going to have their house linked to Fibre Optics so that they can turn on the air conditioning in the house while driving home from the office. Not if they get power they won't as they won't have a job as the unions will have seen to that.
Today we know that no more than half the population would use any more than simple email on their home PC and have no desire to download the latest movie in 3 minutes.
And, just because the Government spends a minimum of $43,000,000,000.00 on this NBN, which will realistically become $86,000,000,000.00 or more, is the average family man on a basic wage the going to race out and spend a fortune on new hardware and software to use it. Doubt it!
Anyhow, this country is in deficit, debt, we owe money! Is it at all logical to put the country into further massive debt to appease a small precentage of the population?

Small business, and I mean "small" business, like the local deli or butcher does not need speed of light downloads.
If you are in the city centre or CBD and need speed of light downloads you can get close to it by paying for it.
Where I am with cable, it is quite adequate for running etrade on real time and trading through the day. If I want to be a true day trader I would need to maybe do something about the speed by spending some money.
I access my work to a host computer in Sydney from my home in Brisbane via a VPN, the response is almost instant. It may well be delayed by a few seconds but who cares, I don't.
Save the $43,000,000,000.00 and do a true cost / benefit analysis like any real business would do, pay off some debt before buying the new car!
