Those who lent the shares bought them because they believe the SP will go up in the long term. Meanwhile they lend them out, get the fee, when price is low they buy cheap, then they get their original shares returned, causing a buying frenzy, and the SP goes up, to higher than at the start of all this. So now they have their original shares, plus the new ones they got cheap, SP is higher and they earned a fee as well. Lots of money there.
They probably have paid mates on HC helping them to send the share price in the direction they want.
They can do this over and over again.
