Brick construction is very common in the US especially in certain areas of the country. I live in the northeast (Pennsylvania) and just about all foundations are made of block. Exterior walls are wood frames with exterior bricks. Bricks are very cheap in this part of the country due to plentiful resources to make them (especially cheap natural gas to bake them.)

Block construction is also extremely common in Florida. Block makes sense because it is impervious to wood boring insects (which are a big problem) as well as extremely hot and humid conditions.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the news regarding FBR and the USA but then again I've been cautiously optimistic for years. The real estate market is really bad right now due to interest rates but there are bright spots (including Florida) due to internal migration from other US states.
