There wasn't particuarly a reason for the downturn in the first place, so it could have simply run out of steam. I'm 90% thinking options converters saw the opportunity to simply and uncomplicatedly make money and they did so, with other options converters then saying 'oh crap am I missing out on my free money opportunity' and chasing it down (but still a 100% profit). The options suck, and that sucks, but if it's any consolation there are now operating expenses available for yonks. I will be very happy when the options business is over. I think a lot of this may simply be Guido; it's not as if he's been this enduring and endearing source of goodness for the last few years.
