The Russian military is facing a mental health crisis, the UK's Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said in its latest intelligence report.
Russian psychologists identified around 100,000 military personnel suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in December last year, the ministry said.
This number is "almost certainly" now higher as the Russian military fails to provide sufficient rotation and recuperation from the battlefield.
The update went on to say that the problem was highlighted by multiple commanders, including General-Major Ivan Popov who was relieved of command in July this year.
"There are additional indications that doctors in Russia are sending military personnel who are unfit to fight to the front," the report said.
With appeal claims against Russian military medical commissions higher in 2023 than they were in 2022 and with a lack of care for its soldiers' mental health and fitness, Russia's combat fighting effectiveness is operating at "sub-optimal levels", the ministry said.
