"Western Mining was a positive and cheap acquisition"

Not any more! Its only a matter of time before Labour expands its new resource tax to tax all mining.

Obviously, BHP prefers not to expand in Australia and get taxed to the max. Better to invest in Canada and pay minimal tax.

With the Labour and the Greens in control (likely), it might also be a good idea for BHP to sell all the coal mines to China and use the proceeds to pay for POT, BP's oil wells, etc.

Expect POT to be just the first off-shore TO on the list.

Now is a good buying opportunity for BHP. Usually, when takeovers are concerned the more the market thinks about it the more the market likes it.
