Everything was done for the benefit of the coloniser, resource and wealth extraction. Any benefit the local people received was the left over effect.

Its like saying Mongolian conquest across Asia and Europe was beneficial to the locals because it opened up trade between East and West and brought new technology and culture to the West, despite the fact that 2/3 of Russians were killed.
