in the 1960s the asian development bank funded the development of a new strain of rice to solve the impending food shortage; it was called the '100day wonder' which will give up to 3 crops a year. soon they found that it was not practical to impoverish the soil so drastically without dire consequences.
the '100 day wonder' was prematurely retired.
