I actually agree with your contention (there has to be a first for everything) that the 2PP favours Labor and that is the true result of our preferential voting system. That is, "if I can't have XXX as my candidate then I would rather have YYY, rather than ZZZ". The only real weakness with the preferential system might be that a huge number of people do not actually seem to understand it.
You should have left it at that.
Where you let yourself down is by trying to confuse the issue (spin?) in somehow equating the addition of National Party votes to the allocation of preferences. They are quite different processes and have very different meanings and results.
