maybe this shorting rort is only a part of the puzzle. A 1 share trade says algo is involved. Well if there are 2 algos working in tandem then the effective manipulation means the SP is artificial, a construct.
Another possibility is there a rat in the ranks, a proxy to another proxy even.
An analogy is match fixing, where not only the win/lose outcome is determined, but the score as well, and the ump/ref is getting a cut
