The ore in a typical (viable) mineral sands site is 6 to 10% heavy minerals.
The ore goes to a concentrator, the hm is separated out and sent for further processing off site.
The balance goes straight back into tails voids... areas mined earlier. Costs too much to double handle.
The hmc (heavy mineral concentrate) goes to a separation plant.
This is where the monazite, previously a waste stream, is generated.
In bygone days the monazite was sent back to the mine. It was blended with concentrator tails and sent back to the void.
Background radiation is monitored to ensure readings are lower than when surveyed prior to mining.
