This strikes me as kind of a silly question (given that I'm just a retail mug investor). I've outlined some benefits, I will leave you to make up your own mind.
In line with the last paragraph of $tock1's post.
"That said, MQG sees the market like no other, and when they conclude that allocating $2bn towards their own stock is the most compelling use of capital, we should take note, and that is what happened today."
You have to trust that with the depth of information available to the board/directors (of a company trading in global capital and debt markets) that was the best judgement.
I don't mind that they're doing a buy back, and I'm much more comfortable with them doing it when the SP is near a 52 week low, than near a 52 week high. Perhaps they see value here too.
