Boy, they don't muck around in those closing auctions. Today, with 2 minutes to go the match was $12.85 and instantly dropped to $12.71. That was a massive, instant shuffle, with (likely) around 175k in the auction at that stage. It gradually re-adjusted to close at $12.78 in the ensuing couple of minutes. Fun and games all around.
[But totally useless and unneeded IMO. Just gives those with access the opportunity to quickly trade big volumes, instead of playing the normal hours algo driven merry-go-round].
