Market theory every winner there is a loser. Not necessarily. Options Yes, Shares not always.
Ok a buyer buys @ $21 and is happy to accumulate as it goes down for a long term bounce. A shorter of the share sees the trend and gets on selling more to draw the price down. Share hits 16.60 and plateaus long termer continues to buy. short term trader gets into the action and buys. The stock Shorter sees the levelling off of the share and buys back there parcel @ $16.80 making a profit. The rest of the market starts to observe the rise in price and jump in.
Up it goes $18 short last of the short term traders takes profit. Share pulls back as strength in north bound direction subsides. Longer termer keeps buying. Share pauses and then continues its slow move north. Hits a xmas rally $21-25 share price. Medium term holders and perhaps some long term holders sell off to realise profit or lower there averaged in price (ie long termer). Along the way there are losers but only because they didnt stick to there plan or were to greedy ie waiting to long for to low a price or reverse holding stock for to long waiting for too high a price.
So potentially you have many winners and only a few (excessively greedy) losers.
