I think they have been using short selling to force the share price down so they can buy shares cheaply with their other hand. In other words they are using related entities to sell on one hand and buy with the other. They can then return some of the bought shares to repay the lender.
Juggling the sells and buys using complex algorithmic trading they can always make money. I think of it as attaching a hose to the ASX and using it to pump money into their bank account.
