One would imagine that this drip feed of information is more harmful in many ways than a neat, clean, basic disclosure, you know, these things are real, we will keep the public informed on a needs to know basis, we have your best interests at heart and we must assess the threat levels before further disclosures will be made.
I mean, while all this stuff is going on we have Mars probes looking for the fundamentals of life, massive radar arrays probing for signals, space telescopes reading chemical compositions of planets, all in the search for life. Seems odd to me that so much has been suggested as going on in our own backyard and that kind of renders much of these esoteric search methods that cost many billions, a waste of time and money.
The tease at this stage makes no sense at all. They could tell us enough to make the situation clear without revealing more than is needed. There would be no social upheaval, or collapse of religion. Religious bodies fail their communities endlessly and the people forget about in a couple of days, on top of that many of these religions teach superstitious dogma that absolutely contradicts reality and people are still unmoved, so a few damn aliens are no problem, they will probably get a visit from Mormon missionaries.
