Instead of venting overboard the gas went through the degasser which vented halfway up the derrick. Gas is denser than air so it accumulated at deck level and got sucked into the engine room vents.....this caused over speed engines and the rest is history.

The decision to divert the diverter flow via the degasser was just one of a number of bad decisions made. Other bad decisions:

- not verifying integrity of the casing cement job by running a cement bond log.
- displacing the riser from mud to sea water with displaced mud going straight to a boat than via the mud pit system. If they'd displaced using a closed system (sea water pumped from pits and mud returned to a pit) they would have noticed a difference in volume of sea water pumped versus mud returned and picked up the ingress of hydrocarbons into the bore early in the operation.
