Yes they would need to sterilise the ground where it is going to otherwise they just have the same issue over again .
Another option is a conveyor , years ago I was involved(in a different capacity from mining) in the movement of spoil for a river crossing , they passed the waste in a chain from one excavator to another ( five excavators total ) it seemed a pretty stupid way to do it , it was just when ADTs(moxies) were starting to be used for short haul .

It would be interesting to see a concept plan of how that would look , as would you not need some type of structure left in place initially so the pit walls did not collapse down into the underground mining spaces ?
