I felt like the main take away from the meeting that Coby wanted people to make was that he believes Weebit is the only company that has got what it takes to become the leader in the ReRAM world. Their recent short video gives a good description of what that means.
Most other companies:
- Aren’t focused on ReRAM. TSMC’s main focus is selling wafers. As a consequence, TSMC customers can essentially only have what TSMC can provide. If they have a requirement for anything custom, e.g. an extremely low power version, then they are not going to get that from TSMC. Weebit, however, could provide that.
- Would tie customers to a particular fab. Coby mentioned that customers like working with Weebit as it makes them foundry agnostic. If they work with TSMC, they are stuck with them. If they work with Weebit and need to use another foundry, the Weebit team can continue with them through that process.
- Are strong in one or two of the areas required (digital design, process and materials, device physics and analog design), but not all four. For example, the smart algorithms are just as essential to getting the required performance out of the memory as the memory itself. As an example, Coby mentioned the read-beforewrite algorithm which is possible because ReRAM is bit addressable. In this algorithm, if it is writing 1 to a bit it first reads the bit and if it is already 1 it doesn’t write to it. This improves the write endurance as it skips the writes that are not needed.
Outside of the technical team of which they are many PHDs with PHDs specifically in ReRAM, Weebit also has its connections with Leti and a world class management team that will help them become the leading company in ReRAM. For example, it was the Leti connection (as they are the pioneers for FD-SOI) that allowed Weebit to get their memory manufactured in Global Foundries.
