I would imagine the letters were a 'reminder' of Australian defamation law. There's been a few posts on here that I would consider to be pretty risky! For example questioning someone's competence is a matter of opinion and not defamatory. I'd be quite happy saying the Western Power debacle and failing to address the lack of accommodation indicates a significant lack of competence, both of these were foreseeable and yet apparently caught the board by surprise. Where some of our fellow posters are on shaky ground is if you start calling people "crooks" or "liars", especially the first one, as unless you have proof that the person you are talking about has a criminal record, (which I don't believe is the case here!), you're going to struggle to defend yourself in court.
